Ryutsu yawned loudly and peered over the huge drop into a murky, dank ocean below. He was positioned atop a pillar. It was around six feet in diameter and around sixty feet tall. He was never told about the vicious changes in tide before he had decided to rest for the afternoon upon what had seemed like a fairly flat and low altitude patch of stone. He had evidently been completely wrong in his judgment because now he was trapped beyond all reasonable doubt; at least for the night.
"How could I have possibly known that the tide would change this violently!?" he grumbled to himself.
He scanned around in a disgruntled manner for some kind of means to escape. he couldn't sit on a sixty foot tall pillar for the whole night.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye he spotted movement. He squinted through the fading sunlight and spotted a small ship bobbing along the water. He grinned and began to yell.
"HEEY! HEEY!! YOU OVER THERE, HELP MEE!!"
His beaming smile reached both corners of his face. It was rare for him to show this much emotion but he was extremely hungry and incredibly excited about this new oppurtunity to get off the rock.
After a few seconds more of shouting, he heard bustling voices sounding in the distance. The ship slowly began to veer around and travel toward his position. As it drew ever closer, Ryutsu began to realise something. These men were undoubtedly pirates. His smile faded all too quickly. The problem here was that he had attracted their attention and there was no chance of escape. He could already see their evil smiles. Suddenly a ridiculous idea began to dawn on him. He peered once again at the vast mass of water behind him. The nearest land was only a few metres swin away from the pillar. Maybe if he dived....
"Hey, Kid!" yelled a particularly nasty pirate, "How's about we help you down from that rock?"
Ryutsu had guessed that this was no amicable request. He frowned and shook his head,
"Sorry I'm going to have to deny you the pleasure,
The man's evil smile transformed into a look of annoyance and confusion,
"Then how're you gonna get down from-
His words were cut painfully short as Ryutsu leaped bravely from the top of his perch. Another thing he hadn't been told about the ocean around the Sunken Plains was that when the water lowers drastically, it was very likely that there would only be a few feet of water left before stony, solid ground. With a splash and a huge gargling yell of pain, Ryutsu scrambled to his feet. He clasped his head and tried to bend his knees to a crouch, but this seemed ineffective as he began to accidentally drown himself. The water reached to his shoulders. How convenient. Still grabbing his swelling head, he began to run toward the nearest flat land. The thing about running in water was that it hindered his progress somewhat. The shouts and the slow, chugging grumble of the ship's propeller began to close in behind him along with several hefty laughs. He had nearly reached a flight of partially sunken stairs when a rough hand grabbed his hood from behind and proceeded to yank him aboard the ship. Of course, the driver of the thing hadn't noticed that it was moving at high velocity toward the sturdy, stone staircase. There came a tremendous, splintering crash as the two objects collided. The hadn who had clamped upon Ryutsu's hood let go suddenly, the momentum of the crash propelling him toward the damp, slimy tiled floor before him. He landed hard and skimmed across the ground a few metres. With a loud groan he pushed himself into a standing position. He leered over his shoulder to meet the eyes of three, very big, very unhappy looking pirates.
"Look here," the one who was presumably the captain began, "You owe us a new ship now see," He gestured toward the small ship smashed upon the heavy-set stairs over his back, "So how you gonna pay us?" He advanced upon Ryutsu, his two goons following along.
"Urmm." He grumbled,
"And watch what you say sonny." The captain added angrily, still advancing.
The group were now only a few metres away from Ryutsu, who was half covered in a wet slime. Out of the blue, a large, mean looking blade was drawn fron the captains sheath and he vaulted toward the teenager. Thinking quickly, Ryutsu pulled his hands toward him, hundreds of peices broke off from the pillar into a mist of stony dust, invading the attackers' vision. He sprinted to one side, slid to a standstill and thrust his palm out toward the attackers from the side as they noticed he was no longer at his previous position. A large spire of stone flew from another pillar behind him and hurled toward the antagonists. It spurred unpleasantly through the hamstring of the rightmost offender, giving a disgusting, sinewy snap as he dropped to one knee. Just as the group comprehended what had just happened, another spike hurtled toward them. They dived to the ground in opposite directions to avoid the strike. The remaining henchman attempted to recover from the dodge and slipped on the surface, tumbling into the waters below the steps, smashing his head hard on the rock. He was rendered immediately unconscious. The childish moans of the, grievously wounded injured goon could be heard above the splash of the other. The captain glared, wide eyed toward a fairly startled Ryutsu and proceeded to run at him, sword raised, once again. Ryutsu waited a moment and span toward the attacker, drawing out his golden hilted dagger and sliding below the arc of the captains' blade. He slashed through his pocket and deep into his trunk like leg. The two jolted in opposite directions and the captain careened down to earth, screaming in pain. Ryutsu chuckled and raised a fist. In it he held the man's purse, which he had managed to grab from his slashed pocket; it held a fair few coins.
"Grrr!! I'll get you! You wait Kid! You owe me a ship!" the maimed sea captain moaned out. Ryutsu gave no answer. He pulled up his dark hood and shot off back towards land.
